Brunch at Granger & Co
A little splash of Sydney has arrived in London. Loveable Aussie chef Bill Granger has just opened his first European restaurant, Granger & Co, on Westbourne Grove. I thought it was only right to gather some Aussie mates for Sunday brunch to test whether Bill could bring his casual dining and fresh flavours to the grey streets of London. I think every Australian had the same idea, so we joined the queue of familiar accents and pretended the Sydney sun was beating down on us.
It wasn’t long before we were seated and we all observed that it really does feel very much like home in here! The interior is very bright and natural with modern but simple furnishings. A huge glass vessel with branches of eucalyptus and native banksia form quite a feature. And the give-away that an Australian is behind this place – good coffee!
Bill’s signature dishes are the centrepiece of the lunch menu. I couldn’t go past his much famed sweetcorn fritters. Packed with juicy kernels of fresh corn they are pretty delicious. I was hoping for a bit more oomph though, served with some chilli relish would have given them a bit of a kick. But who am I to mess with a Granger classic!
The full Aussie breakfast is pretty impressive. The scrambled eggs which gave Granger the title of “egg master of Sydney” live up to expectations. Served with crusty sourdough toast, bacon, roast tomato, chipolatas & mushrooms it is the breakfast of champions or errr Australians!
Just one mouthful of Bill’s fluffy ricotta hotcakes with honeycomb butter will justify the trek across town and the half an hour wait on a crisp November morning to get a table at Granger & Co. They are that good!
What I really love about the menu is that you can have it your way. There are loads of sides and options so that you can create the perfect brunch. This relaxed and friendly approach to dining is reflected in the whole ambiance of Granger & Co , despite the queue outside you are not rushed or feel any pressure from the staff to eat and run.
Granger & Co is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday. And I think I might just be back for all three!!
